Intelligent Assistance and Lumberjack System Apps ready for El Capitan

OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” is about to be released to the public. All the Intelligent Assistance apps required updates to support the new OS, so be sure to update your apps in the App Store before you upgrade to El Capitan!

Apps from our own store have also been updated. Each of the non-App Store apps has a Check for Updates… item under the app’s main menu. If there’s a new version available it’ll download and install itself for you.

Lumberjack System’s Lumberyard and backLogger apps have been updated for El Capitan. Download from within the app before upgrading to El Capitan. The iOS Logger app has been tested against iOS 9 and requires no updating.

If it’s September, it’s IBC, Supermeet and FCP X Expo!

If it’s September, it’s time for IBC – the kinder, gentler, European version of NAB! In 2013 I made my first exploratory trip to see if we should attend IBC and had few commitments. Second trip last year and Lumberjack shared a table at the Supermeet with FCPWORKS.

This year we’re once again teaming with FCPWORKS and Soho Editors by being part of the FCP X Expo. It’s a short walk from the RAI and Greg, Cirina and I will be there most of Saturday and Sunday, until we head to the Supermeet.

If you’re at IBC, come say hello at the FCP X Expo which will be the center of all things Final Cut Pro X at IBC, or at the Supermeet. We’re happy to talk about Lumberjack System, or any of our Intelligent Assistance tools. I’ll be helping Sam Westman with his Feature Film Workflows session at 12:50 on Saturday the 12th September.

Join FCPWORKS’ Sam Mestman on a crash course in feature film metadata prep and on-set workflows. Sam will also co-present an enhanced documentary feature workflow with Lumberjack System’s Philip Hodgetts. Shoot for the edit and maximize the potential under-the-hood of Final Cut Pro X

I’ll be focusing on how Chuck Braverman Productions used the transcription feature we built into Lumberjack System on their two OJ Simpson documentaries for the A&E Network. We announced Lumberjack’s ability to import transcripts into Final Cut Pro X at NAB. In fact we had worked closely with Braverman Productions to make that feature work for them. I’ll be sharing their story.

Grab a Lumberjack pouch from us there, or stop by our table at the Supermeet and we’ll give you one of these usual little pouches there.

Throw in at least three Lunch with Philip and Greg recordings while we’re there (although I think one will be an evening “lunch”) and it’ll be a busy week.

Particularly since I also want to record a couple of The semiSerious Foodies episodes (coming soon) in Amsterdam (Dutch pancakes and Filet American) as well as in Barcelona where we’re heading first.

All with my “fits over my shoulder” production kit!

FCP X Creative Summit and San Diego FCP Users Presentations

It’s not that often that I’m in front of a crowd any more, but there are a couple of presentations coming up where I’ll be featuring Lumberjack System: San Jose SupermeetUp, FCP X Creative Summit and a week later, San Diego FCP Users Group. The two presentations will focus on my long-standing passion for Content Metadata and how that saves time and money with Lumberjack System and Final Cut Pro X.

While I can’t save you any money on the Creative Summit, follow this link to save $5 on the SupermeetUp ticket and come get a free pouch when you say Hi!  We’ll also answer any Intelligent Assistance app or Lumberjack questions. Latest word is that Alex Gollner will be interviewing Randy Ubillos, the Chief Architect of Adobe Premiere versions 1 through 4.2 and Final Cut Pro leading up to FCP X.

My Family History Video Project – Continued

Although I started this project on a small scale during my family’s quadrennial reunion back in early January, I was somewhat thwarted by circumstances, for which I am thankful. In the time since January, I realized I needed to become a lot more serious about it. To that end, I rethought the project, and the questions, into a more long-term history project, starting with the recalled history of my aunts, going back up to 80 years.

Happy First Birthday Lumberjack System

Longer term readers will know that I have two “day jobs:” at Intelligent Assistance and Lumberjack System. While it’s been a great year for Intelligent Assistance, it’s Lumberjack System that has grown up so quickly in its first year.

We celebrate the second year, with a new website and some real success stories.

NAB Presentations from the FCPWORKS Demo Room – Mine Included!

The presentations from the NAB demo room hosted by FCPWORKS are now up, including my Lumberjack System presentation, which I think was the best I’ve ever explained the benefits of Lumberjack.

The full list of presentations is in the FCPWORKS YouTube Channel and they’re all worth watching, but I’d draw attention to the Direct TV Original Programming presentation (because they use two of the Intelligent Assistance apps and are a recent convert to Lumberjack, which saved them two days in a 7 day schedule). Likewise FCPX for Indies/Urban Cowboy and Mike Matzdorff’s Focus presentation mention how our tools are making their work easier.

My favorite comment – on Twitter – from Direct TV’s Marc Bach is:

Buying your apps is like buying hours of sleep!

Which is, after all, why we do it.

NAB 2015

Another NAB is nearly upon us. This will be my 18th consecutive show, although last year I was in Las Vegas but never made it to the show floor! This year I can’t avoid it as I’m doing a panel on the Digital Production BuZZ show Monday morning, and attending some press conferences/meetings on the show floor.

Most of the time I’ll be in the FCPWORKS room. On Wednesday 12:30 I’ll be presenting the definitive Lumberjack System demo, based on logging the presentations in the room itself! I’ll be testing out an OWC Thunderbay Mini  to hold the media from the event. The whole week’s presentations will be interesting but if you want the definitive word on FCP X – check out the keynotes by Apple folk Monday and Tuesday.

Sunday evening you can find me at the #postchat meetup at  O’Sheas starting 8pm Sunday evening, then on to the KISS mini golf event sponsored by Filmmakers of the Inland Empire.

Monday afternoon I’ll be contributing to Scott Simmons’ Post Production World session on Moving Metadata from Production to Post. That evening will be mostly at the FCP X Guru meetup at the Hard Rock Cafe and Tuesday evening Greg and I will be at the Supermeet of course. The definitive party list is at Toolfarm.

Hope to see you all there. If you spot me, say hello.

Amsterdam Supermeet and Lumberjack System

Greg and I are heading for Amsterdam tomorrow for IBC, but especially the Amsterdam Supermeet. This will be the first time we’ve had Lumberjack System at a Supermeet and we’re going to celebrate by giving away 200 of these cute little keyring pouches that can carry a credit card, business cards, or a USB memory stick attached to your keyring.

Two of the pouches will carry vouchers for two (2) Envoy Pro EX 240GB SSD drives courtesy of OWC/ MacSales which you’ll get instantly from OWC at the Supermeet.

Come check out Lumberjack System – if you edit with Final Cut Pro X, some easy logging in the field will pay huge benefits preparing for post.

Visit our table at the #Amsterdam #SuperMeet.  Save €5.00 on tickets. Buy using this link: https://amsterdam2014.eventbrite.com/?discount=lumbervip

Get a copy of Producer’s Best Friend Free with Lumberjack Subscription

I’m very happy to announce that Lumberjack System now has an iOS Logger – an app for logging without an Internet connection. To celebrate we’re offering the next 50 (well, less now) people who sign up for a year of Lumberjack System a free copy of Intelligent Assistance’s Producer’s Best Friend.

Evolving Thinking: 4K and Lumberjack

I frequently find myself evolving my position on technology as new information comes to light. As my email sig line used to say “Above all, I reserve the right to be wrong”. As new information comes to light, or reaching a certain point in thinking allows another perspective to open up, my positions frequently evolve.

One example would be the use of 4K, another is the development of Lumberjack System.
